New training could benefit in job search
Buzz up!

Here’s a tip if you’re unemployed: get training in one of the growing job sectors — health care, education, professional services, government. That may mean going back to school this summer.
Jobs are available nationwide, even though they may be disappearing in some areas. So now may be time to change gears. There are more than 3 million jobs nationwide that employers apparently are having a hard time filling because they can’t find enough people who have experience to handle positions that are available.
What’s likely to happen over time is lots of on-the-job training for some positions if companies can’t hire workers fast enough or find the candidates they want. That may mean jobs that don’t pay the higher salaries some unemployed are accustomed to, but it’s better than waiting to jump back into the job market with rusty, obsolete or irrelevant skills.
Besides, trying to wait out the recession may not be the smartest idea. Savings will be eroded and joining the ranks of the uninsured is a big gamble, even for someone without dependants.
If private sector jobs aren’t enticing enough, try public service for a while. The government is open for business, with thousands of jobs listed on www.usajobs.gov
For example, if you’re on the sidelines from the financial services industry, the traditionally not-so-sexy Internal Revenue Service just may be the place to be. The agency is looking for about 800 agents to help police the U.S. tax code. The Obama administration says it needs help to detect and pursue American tax evaders and go after their offshore tax shelters.
And speaking of government, the economic stimulus package included billions for training. So this summer may be the ideal time to take a look at what the community college has to offer.

God found someone a great job!
God promises to provide for our needs. Here's an excerpt from Heather Kopp's devotional, God's Little Book of Guarantees:
"Don't worry about what you will eat or drink, or about what you will wear. People who don't know Me spend a lot of time worrying about these things. You know that I'm fully aware of your needs. Instead of fretting about these things, seek My kingdom before anything else and spend your efforts obtaining My righteousness. Then I guarantee that all these other things will be given to you as well." from Matthew 6:31-33.
"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself." Matthew 6:34

Jobs in Fayette County
http://www.fayettega.org/jobs
Also, Dave O'Farrell, who leads Jobseekers of Peachtree City, has some good thoughts to share today. He notes that many of us get down and discouraged when our job search drags on. Here's what he says in an email dated 5/14:
"...Some people have a very difficult time embracing hope when life seems hopeless; seeing the new day dawning when they are in their darkest night; expecting a great outcome when all they can see is a train wreck in their rearview mirror."
...God wants to meet you -- right where you are. If you are in a depressed state right now, remember that it is -- or it can be -- a temporary state... get the help you need to pull yourself out of the pit of despair. One good place to start is at JobSeekers of PTC on Friday morning. Don't lose heart, and don't lose hope. The LORD is close and he will save you. It starts when you turn to him and ask for help."
Then Dave quotes verse 18 from Psalm 34: "The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
No matter where you are in your job search, be sure that God is close to YOU. Come to GEN, and attend other networking opportunities, if you can. We are here to pray with you and for you.
"I am the Lord your God, who holds your right hand, and I tell you, 'Don't be afraid. I will help you.'" --Isaiah 41:13

Dealing with Job Loss
Ross focuses on dealing with the grief we feel after losing a loved one, but her ideas can also help cope with the emotions that stem from a job loss.

Have you ever heard of churn? It's a term that refers what to happens when corporations lay off workers while they also hire for other positions.
This info comes from Dave O'Farrell, who writes an email newsletter for Jobseekers of Peachtree City, GA. Dave believes that there are jobs out there, despite the weak economy. He quotes the print edition of Fortune's 13 April 2009 edition: "'According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, while 2.5 million people were laid off in January, 4.4 million new workers were hired...' An abridged version of the article can be found here."
Dave adds that companies with less than 500 employees have been growing over the last few years, and urges job seekers to check for opportunities at smaller companies.
We hope to see you at tomorrow's meeting!
