A person of influence

Patti, thanks for sharing this article!

"Dear Patti,
I hope this note finds you well! Below is a new article on influence. Understanding influence and the aspects of disproportionate influence are critical to the success of any organization, individual or team. While it's truly a quality of great leaders, it's also one that is very applicable to each of our lives and careers.
I'd welcome your feedback here.

Being a Person of Disproportionate Influence: Trust

Several years ago my wife accompanied me to France when I spoke to a group of leaders who represented various organizations from around Europe. Anne had always wanted to visit Portugal, and since the cost of the additional stopover was minimal, it sounded fine to me. Our travel agent booked us into a beautiful hotel on the Lisbon coast. When the hotel confirmation arrived a few days before our departure, I went into shock when I realized how much those several nights in an ocean view room were going to cost. Anne anticipated my reaction and assured me that we were going to save money because she had packed an old suitcase with enough food for the three-day stay. The dry cereal with non-refrigerated milk, nuts and canned tuna fish on saltines were dreadful, particularly in light of the fabulous hotel dining room overlooking the blue Atlantic we passed by each day. The tables laden with food, flowers and ice swans reminded me of a lavish movie set and made our suitcase meals all the worse. The night before our departure I went to the hotel’s front desk to look over our bill, and as I turned to leave, the clerk asked if I had made our breakfast reservation for the following morning. When I expressed my confusion, she explained to me that all our breakfasts and dinners were included in the price of the hotel!

The implications of her words choked me like the dry bran flakes and warm milk I had for breakfast that morning. For three days, we ate some of the most marginal food imaginable out of an old suitcase when we could have enjoyed our already paid for gourmet meals in the beautiful hotel dining room!
Our experience captures the plight of many organizations that perpetually eat out of the suitcase of mediocre performance, when, in reality, an abundance of commitment, productivity and exceptional results lay unused in the hearts and minds of their employees.

Often leaders simply do not inspire the members of their organization or team to use their full capabilities and willingness to care deeply about customers and the overall success of the organization. How does a leader influence members of their organization to be emotionally invested in this way?
I often ask groups, “How many of you want to be a person of disproportionate influence?” I generally get a 90 to 100% “yes” answer to that question. We would likely answer “yes” as well. Being a person of disproportionate influence is the essence of leadership. Even when we do not have a formal leadership title, we can still seek to create a significant and lasting impact on others.

The essence of having disproportionate influence is to foster an individual’s inherent desire and readiness to bring passion and capability to any endeavor. While there are a number of important elements to influencing this exceptional performance, at the epicenter is trust, the first principle of disproportionate influence.

How do we inspire trust—let me suggest three ways.
First, we must keep our commitments—do what we say we’re going to do. While simple in one sense, it is quite profound in another. Our credibility, a basis for trust, emanates from this very important axiom. For example, returning calls and emails promptly, meeting deadlines, and following through on what we said we would do create trust. We know individuals who don’t keep their commitments, and the resulting loss of trust usually diminishes their influence on us. When a boss who we deem untrustworthy asks us to do something, we may comply, but we often do not bring our full commitment to the task.
Second, we must make our thinking visible. Most work is accomplished on the basis of influence, not power or position. If we want to influence someone, we must make it clear what we trying to do, why, how and when. This type of transparent communication raises trust in others, particularly in the turbulence that most organizations are experiencing today.

Third, we must run by the same rules we expect others to observe. One CEO I know always flies first class, but insists all the members of his organization fly coach. While it is his prerogative, it just does not set well with others. His working by a different set of rules fosters distrust on even more important issues in the company. His credibility is compromised.
I firmly believe nobody intends to be mediocre—most want to be great. I’ve never met anyone who got out of bed in the morning and said, “I wonder how I can be really average today?” Being a person of disproportionate influence fundamentally means that we encourage the best in others—we urge them toward the greatness that often lies untapped in each of us.

How do we get started? We begin by looking for ways to increase our trustworthiness and credibility among those we wish to influence. I will talk about other crucial ways to become a person of disproportionate in future newsletters, but this vital principle is the cornerstone. We can lay the cornerstone today."

Update to church job lead

GEN-ers, we've been advised that the part-time opening at CrossRoads Church has been now filled by one of their members, so we've removed the post about it.

Good news!

GEN-ers, Janna emailed the church office this morning to say that she has been hired for a long-term temporary job at the Douglas County Sentinel. She'll take the place of their receptionist, who is on a leave.

Janna, we're happy for you (we may be the only group around that celebrates when we lose a member ;-) ). Please be sure of our prayers as you begin this new job. We all wish you success and happiness.

Your toughest battle

Dave O'Farrell, who helps lead Jobseekers in Peachtree City , wrote a terrific
e-newsletter last week. He said, "...being unemployed is one of the toughest spiritual battles you will ever face."

It's true. When you're between jobs, you can lose your sense of identity and purpose. You may struggle financially; lose contact with the co-workers you once saw and talked to every day; and and feel uncertain and fearful about the future.

One well-known test ranks the most stressful events you can experience. With apologies to David Letterman, here are the "top ten" life-changing events:

1. Death of a child

2. Death of a spouse

3. Death of parent or sibling

4. Divorce

5. Separation from spouse due to marital difficulties or work

6. Being held in jail

7. Loss of your job

8. An illness or injury that was very serious

9. Death of a close friend

10. Pregnancy (Okay, this can be a good life-changing event--but it can still be a challenge.)

So what can you do to cope during difficult times? O'Farrell recommends 3 things.

First,
Remember that this is temporary. You WILL find a new job. In the meantime, O'Farrell says, "There is a purpose in your suffering. I am reminded of James' words, 'Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.'" -- James 1:2-4

Second, You still have choices, so choose to be proactive. Get out of bed every morning and make a plan. Then work that plan. Remember, you are also on a spiritual journey, so talk to God often. As the Bible says, "Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." -- Matthew 6:33

Finally, remember that God loves you. No matter what happens in our lives, God can use it for good. You know those beautiful stained glass windows in our sanctuary? Once they were just pieces of broken glass; it took an artist's hand to turn them into works of art. Even when our hearts are broken, God--the one true Artist--can put the pieces back together in an altogether new and beautiful form. He won't waste what you're experiencing, if you'll seek His will.

Join us this week at GEN. We're praying for you!
Lynn

A cure for bad news

GEN-ers, the news you may have heard on the radio or TV this morning was grim. Georgia's unemployment rate has hit double digits. It's easy to feel discouraged when you're looking for a job.

But with God, there is always hope! Here's a short devotional taken from Max Lucado's book, Grace for the Moment:

"I am the LORD, the God of every person on the earth. Nothing is impossible for me." Jeremiah 32:27

Lucado writes, "We need to hear that God is still in control. We need to hear that it's not over until he says so. We need to hear that life's mishaps and tragedies are not a reason to bail out. They are simply a reason to sit tight.

"Corrie ten Boom used to say, 'When the train goes through a tunnel and the world gets dark, do you jump out? Of course not. You sit still and trust the engineer to get you through....'

"The way to deal with discouragement?...(R)ead the story of God....Be reminded that you aren't the first person to weep. And you aren't the first person to be helped.
Read the story and remember, (the) story is yours!"

Don't let the wrong words kill your resume!

The Savvy Networker
10 Boilerplate Phrases That Kill Resumes
by: Liz Ryan

The 2009 job market is very different from job markets of the past. If you haven't job-hunted in a while, the changes in the landscape can throw you for a loop.
One of the biggest changes is the shift in what constitutes a strong resume. Years ago, we could dig into the Resume Boilerplate grab-bag and pull out a phrase to fill out a sentence or bullet point on our resume. Everybody used the same boilerplate phrases, so we knew we couldn't go wrong choosing one of them -- or many -- to throw into your resume.
Things have changed. Stodgy boilerplate phrases in your resume today mark you as uncreative and "vocabulary challenged." You can make your resume more compelling and human-sounding by rooting out and replacing the boring corporate-speak phrases that litter it, and replacing them with human language -- things that people like you or me would actually say.
Here are the worst 10 boilerplate phrases -- the ones to seek out and destroy in your resume as soon as possible:
Results-oriented professional
Cross-functional teams
More than [x] years of progressively responsible experience
Superior (or excellent) communication skills
Strong work ethic
Met or exceeded expectations
Proven track record of success
Works well with all levels of staff

Bottom-line orientation
You can do better. What about adding a human voice to your resume? Here's an example:
"I'm a Marketing Researcher who's driven by curiosity about why people buy what they do. At XYZ Industries, I used consumer surveys and online-forum analysis to uncover the reasons why consumers chose our competitors over us; our sales grew twenty percent over the next six months as a result. I'm equally at home on sales calls or analyzing data in seclusion, and up to speed on traditional and new-millennium research tools and approaches. I'm fanatical about understanding our marketplace better every day, week and month -- and have helped my employers' brands grow dramatically as a result."
You don't have to write resumes that sound like robots wrote them. A human-voiced resume is the new black -- try it!
