Encouragement from Jobseekers of Peachtree City

Here's another great post from Dave O'Farrell, who directs Jobseekers of Peachtree City, GA:

"1. Inspiration: We Reap What We Sow
Todd called me on Tuesday to tell me he'd just accepted a job. Only 14 days prior, he'd called to say he'd been liberated by another company. Wow, a two-week job search. Naturally, he got the job through a friend. The timing was perfect; the timing was of God. The seeds of success were sown 18-24 months ago. Todd reaped what he had sown.

In last Friday's devotional at JobSeekers, Emily compared managing our careers to tending a garden. It sounds like we have a theme going here.

Several years ago another JobSeeker...wrote to me about some networking success he'd had. He said, "I'm convinced that networking is like planting seeds. Some will germinate, but it may take a while. The seeds need ongoing attention to help them grow."

It occurred to me that Jesus told a similar story; it's known as the parable of the sower, found in Matthew 13:1-9 and 18-23:

(1-9) That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. Then he told them many things in parables, saying: "A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop -- a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. He who has ears, let him hear."

(18-23) "Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path. The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away. The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown."

- - - - - - -

Jesus was talking about those who hear the Good News in this parable. The way we respond to the call of God has eternal consequences. The cool thing about parables is that they teach truths about our time here on earth as well. I believe this parable is where we get the phrase, "We reap what we sow."

When it comes to job search, this parable teaches us that we experience the consequences of our actions. The seeds and soil represent the way we sow (use) our strategy, tools and skills:

1. Along the path.

Job boards may seem like the path of least resistance, but Jesus teaches us that the evil one snatches our seed away. Of the four places to scatter seed, this is the only one where Jesus mentions Satan. Satan loves it when we rely on ad response because thousands of birds are snatching our résumés away before employers get to see them. Responding to ads gives us false hope.

I hear those of you scattering seeds along the path saying, "Dave, I don't know what's wrong, I've sent out 50 résumés and haven't heard a thing back."

2. In rocky places.

This represents those of us who begin networking with joy, but when trouble comes we quickly fall away. We give it a try but quickly let it go when it fails to produce a crop. We get pumped up on Friday, but by the time the sun comes up on Monday, we revert to job boards or fall into depression or get distracted by competing priorities.

Those of you who sow in rocky places say, "I've tried networking; I called someone and left a message and they didn't call me back. Networking works for other people, but not for me."

3. Among the thorns.

Here we are networking hard, but worries and deceitfulness choke our enthusiasm out, making our efforts unfruitful. We try networking and have some success, but get bogged down for a couple of reasons: "analysis paralysis" and "all eggs in one basket." Sometimes we get so focused on one job that if it doesn't bear fruit, there are no other seeds that have broken the surface, so we have to start the cycle again by sowing more seeds.

Those of you who sow among the thorns say, "I'm interviewing for a job and I need to focus all my attention on this one so I don't blow it."

4. On good soil.

Those of us who sow in good soil produce a crop 100, 60 or 30 times what we sow. Like Todd and Ken, we "get it." We know that producing a crop a crop takes time and informed effort. We sow some seed every day. We nurture the seed we've already sown. We do our best to give it the right amount of sunlight, water and fertilizer. We pull weeds and prune. Over time our efforts yield a crop -- one or more job offers.

For those of you who sow in good soil, I hear you saying things like, "I met with my advisory board and they've given me some new ideas." "That call didn't go so well, but I'm not giving up." "I asked a friend for help and you won't believe what happened."

- - - - -

Which of these four characterizes your search? When you look around at your garden, are birds snatching your message and flying away? Do you try networking but quickly revert to job boards? Have you zeroed in on one thing to the exclusion of all others? Or do you accept disappointment and failure as part of the process of success?

ACTION ITEM: As soon as you finish reading this message, I challenge you to call three friends and ask for advice, information and/or referrals (AIR). Plant some seeds like Todd and Ken did.

Come to JobSeekers tomorrow and let us know what happened.

2. Success Story: Collins Uses Lesson on Friday to Land Job on Monday

We love to hear from you when you land a new position. Please write and let us know how you found your job, what you learned from the experience, and how JobSeekers helped you.

People who come to JobSeekers learn skills that help them land good jobs, close to home, in minimum time. Last week our topic was "Improving Your P&L (Probing and Listening) Skills."

When asked what the secret is to impressing a recruiter, Diane Borhani, recruiting director at Deloitte said, "Display a great attitude as well as a strong work ethic. Understand who we are and what we do. Demonstrate your level of interest and preparation not only by emphasizing relevant strengths, but also by asking insightful questions."

Sounds like Brian C. asked some insightful questions. He learned how on Friday, used his skills on Monday morning and got a job offer on Monday afternoon. Come to JobSeekers tomorrow; you might learn something that helps you land a job next week.

Hi Dave and Linda,

I'd like to say thanks to you and all the other members of the Ship's Crew at JobSeekers. You've helped me stay focused, determined and motivated for these five weeks since I was liberated. The sessions encouraged me to stay busy, and reinforced to me that sitting still is not an option between jobs.

As Dave was giving advice this past Friday about "P&L" skills in interviewing, I got a phone call to set up an interview for this morning at General Dynamics here in Peachtree City. I interviewed against two other well-qualified candidates. They called me a little while ago and offered me the position. The P&L session was very timely and was a great help.

All the JobSeekers sessions have been very helpful, and Linda's résumé class helped me get my résumé in proper shape.

The job is a contract position that will likely have me looking again in a year or so; I will be back at JobSeekers if necessary, because the advice and support from the Ship's Crew and from other liberated professionals is invaluable.

Thank you again, and God bless you.

-- Brian

GE Bringing 400 Jobs To Metro Atlanta
Facility To Open In July

POSTED: 10:24 am EDT April 22, 2010
UPDATED: 10:41 am EDT April 22, 2010

ATLANTA -- General Electric will bring 400 jobs to metro Atlanta when it moves the headquarters of one of its divisions to Cobb County later this year.

GE’s Digital Energy business will be located near the Cobb Galleria and interstate 75. The facility will include a smart grid engineering laboratory and a customer solutions showcase.

“Atlanta is an ideal location for us to continue to grow our smart grid business,” said Bob Gilligan, vice president—digital energy for GE Energy Services in an e-mail sent to CBS News Atlanta.

Funding from the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 will be used to hire and train the GE employees.

The Georgia Economic Development Office and the governor’s office worked with GE on the move to metro Atlanta.

“GE Energy’s decision to expand its presence in Georgia through the opening of the Smart Grid Technology Center of Excellence supports our state’s strategic growth as a global leader in the energy sector,” said Gov. Sonny Perdue.

The smart grid lab will include a collaboration between GE and Georgia Tech featuring experiments in wind and solar energy, according to GE officials.

“Research on smart grid technologies and their related systems is important at Georgia Tech, so there are limitless opportunities to collaborate with GE,” said Greg King, Strategic Partners Office at Georgia Tech. “We look forward to working with GE in this latest area of technology and innovation.”

The smart grid customer solutions showcase will feature hands-on interactive displays that can help visitors understand the challenges of delivering electricity over the power grid. Displays will include plug-in car charging and home energy management to renewable generation and automated grid communications networks.

GE will move into the new headquarters in July, and the customer showcase is scheduled to open in September.

OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR
Sonny Perdue
GOVERNOR
For Immediate Release

Frozen Food Manufacturer Expands to Henry County
McDonough food processing facility to create 242 jobs, and invest
$27.5 million
>
ATLANTA—Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue announced today that De
Wafelbakkers, a manufacturer of frozen pancakes, waffles and French
toast, will locate a food processing operation in McDonough. The
project will result in the creation of 242 jobs and a $27.5 million
investment within the first three years of operation.
“The food processing sector in Georgia is a significant force for the
state’s economy,” said Governor Perdue. “De Wafelbakkers’ decision to
locate in Henry County is a great win for Georgia’s pro-business
environment and for the McDonough community.”

De Wafelbakkers manufactures frozen pancakes, waffles, French toast,
and shelf-stable waffles, which are distributed throughout the United
States, Mexico and Puerto Rico. The company’s Henry County food
processing operation will locate in a 92,000-square-foot facility
already outfitted for food manufacturing and frozen baking. This
facility will be the company’s second manufacturing facility in the
United States.

“De Wafelbakkers is excited to expand into Georgia. As we have
continued to grow our business we needed a second facility to better
service our customers,” said Dumas Garrett, De Wafelbakkers President
& CEO. “Having the State of Georgia’s and Henry County’s support on
this project was an important part of our decision to locate this
facility in McDonough. In addition to Georgia’s progressive business
climate, the availability of an existing McDonough facility already
outfitted for food processing served as a logistical advantage among
competing sites for our expansion in the Southeast.”

In addition to an available food processing facility, Henry County
offers strategic logistical advantages that set it apart from
competing sites, including the county’s close proximity to cargo
shipping operations at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International
Airport.

“De Wafelbakkers’ decision to locate its newest food manufacturing
plant in Henry County is certainly welcome news, particularly given
our recent economic challenges,” said Henry County Commission Chair
Elizabeth “BJ” Mathis. “We pride ourselves on being a progressive,
business-friendly community, and we certainly look forward to helping
De Wafelbakkers to continue to grow and prosper in Henry County.”
“We are delighted to add our welcome to De Wafelbakkers” said Jim
White, chairman of the Henry County Development Authority. “The
company’s investment and substantial job creation of more than 240 new
jobs over the next three years is what economic development is all
about, and we are proud to have been part of the team working to win
this project for Henry County and for Georgia.”

The De Wafelbakkers McDonough food processing facility will leverage a
well-trained workforce through collaboration with Georgia’s nationally
recognized Quick Start Training Program.  This program provides
strategic and industry-specific workforce training solutions free of
charge to qualified new, expanding and existing companies doing
business in Georgia.

Tom Croteau managed this expansion project for the Georgia Department
of Economic Development.

Airtran Airways plans to hire

Marsi sent us the following good news from the AJC: AirTran plans to start hiring again. If you're interested, visit the company's website for details. Airlines often allow standby travel for employees, so check it out!

from the AJC: "Airways plans to hire 159 pilots and 135 flight attendants this year as it resumes growth after a year of cutbacks across the industry.

While Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines has been hiring employees in airport customer service, reservations and other areas, it has not announced pilot or flight attendant hiring.

Southwest Airlines' top executive this week said his airline has no plans to hire employees this year and is trying to reduce headcount through attrition. Dallas-based Southwest is the nation's largest low-cost carrier.

AirTran's move is a bright spot for both the airline industry and the economy in metro Atlanta, AirTran's main hub and home base for most of its workers. Airlines are among the region's biggest private employers.

About 20 newly-hired pilots have already finished training, AirTran said.

The airline plans to increase its flight capacity by 3 percent to 4 percent this year. Next year, it plans to add seven Boeing 737 jets to its fleet.

AirTran, which no longer has employees on furlough, hired flight attendants last year but hasn't hired pilots in several years.

The pilots and flight attendants coming aboard will help AirTran address some problems in operations, the company said. Over Easter weekend, AirTran said it canceled some flights due to staffing shortages, heavy holiday traffic and crew scheduling issues.

Along with the pilots and flight attendants, AirTran expects to continue to hire ground workers and gate agents.

"We're in a very good position to be able to grow," said AirTran spokesman Christopher White.

Jim Morris, a spokesman for the Air Line Pilots Association at AirTran, said "it's great" that AirTran is adding employees.

'We also believe that this would be impossible if it had not been for the contribution of the existing pilot group," he said, as the union continues years-long negotiations with the company over a contract. "We think it’s time for the company to finally finish this deal.'"

Power in Jars of Clay - a devotional by Dave O'Farrell

Thanks to Dave O'Farrell of Jobseekers in Peachtree City, GA, for this message:

Power in Jars of Clay

I've been thinking about potters and jars of clay this week. It was mentioned in my reading this morning (Chapter four of Experiencing God, by Henry Blackaby and Claude King). I have a beautiful watercolor painting of a clay jar (from former JobSeeker and graphic designer Lori Withner). And Betsy Haas, one of the pastors at our church, uses handmade pottery to serve communion to small groups. She described what the metaphor means to her.

Clay in the Hands of The Potter
Both the Old and New Testament use clay as a metaphor. In the OT, we are described as clay in the hands of The Potter. Isaiah 64:8 says, "Yet, O LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand." We are being transformed into the image of God and of his son Jesus. Betsy said it is amazing what can be accomplished, and how we can be transformed, when we place ourselves in The Potter's hands.

Here's the same metaphor used in Jeremiah 18:1-6: "This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: 'Go down to the potter's house, and there I will give you my message.' So I went down to the potter's house, and I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him. Then the word of the LORD came to me: 'O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter does?' declares the LORD. 'Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.'"

We get marred on this journey of life, and yet the Potter forms us into another pot. What new pot is the Lord shaping you into?

Jars of Clay
In the NT, we are described as jars of clay. First Corinthians 4:7 says, "But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us." It's only we when go through the kiln of life that we become shiny and strong. Yet our earthy bodies are nothing compared to the extraordinary bodies we will have in heaven. Paul makes one thing known for sure: these earthly bodies, fragile though they are, can hold God's treasure -- his all-surpassing power.

As you experience your job search, and with this in mind, ask God these three questions:

1. Lord, what do you want me to learn as I go through my job search?
Oftentimes, we put lids on our jars that prevent us from hearing God's gentle leading or from receiving His blessings. Open your eyes and ears, hearts and minds to the leading of His spirit. Respond to His call. For instance, here's what a JobSeeker wrote one time:

"He's TRULY A GOOD GOD, because even when I gave up on myself, He never gave up on me. There was one thing I especially learned through my journey: I had to give up on myself in order for Him to work on me. Please let everyone know that I am praying for all of them. God will move in our lives on His time, not ours."

2. How do you want me to change?
Allow The Potter to mold you into the person he wants you to be. Einstein's definition of insanity applies. To get a different result, we have to think differently, do things differently and become a different person. One fellow that I met with said "I am a spiritually changed man because of this 16-month job search." Shortly after that he received an offer out of the blue (or from Heaven above?) on a position that was dead two months earlier. God is good.

3. Who do you want me to serve in your name?
This job search is not about you only; it's about how you are going to use the talents God has given you to serve his purposes here on this earth. We receive blessings so that we may be a blessing to others. Whether it's through your vocation, avocation, or just the selfless gift of your time and energy, serve others. Some of the best therapy I've ever experienced is when I've helped others. Ask God to fill your jar up so that you can pour his blessings on others.

If you do this -- learn, change, serve -- you will be ready to withstand the hardships associated with job search. Listen to the next two verses in 1 Corinthians 4:8-9: "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed." No matter how badly things are going at the moment, God will never leave you nor forsake you.

See you tomorrow at JobSeekers; the place where we fill our jars up!

What to do if you can't pay the IRS

Thanks, Kevin, for passing along this information:

"Recently, I have a couple of people ask me, What should I do if I owe the IRS more than I can pay?" The (document below) is an article from the AJC and (contains) a little blip from the IRS on this very topic. If someone asks, they can also go to the IRS website and do a search for installment plan. I thought you might find this handy in case someone asks.

Thanks,
Kevin

What to do if you owe the IRS taxes?

7:00 am April 13, 2010, by Rana Cash

No matter how well-intentioned, there are those who simply will not be able to afford to meet their federal tax obligation this year. The April 15 filing deadline is days away. While more than a few circled this time of year in anticipation of a tax refund, others have dreaded it, knowing they’ll owe the government money — often times money they don’t have.
What do you do if you can’t pay?
File anyway: Whether you owe money or not, you should still file your taxes or be among the Internal Revenue Service’s estimated 300,000 Georgians filing an extension by Thursday’s deadline. The penalty for filing late is no less than 5 percent per month of the tax due, up to 25 percent. An extension for time to file is not an extension to pay. However, the late-filing penalty is 10 times greater than the late-payment penalty.
Pay what you can: If you owe money, pay as much as you can when you file. If you file and pay 90 percent of your tax liability, you will not be fined with a failure-to-penalty as long as the remainder is paid by the extension deadline.
Don’t run and hide: If you don’t want to get on the IRS’ bad side, then don’t avoid them. Ignoring letters, dodging phone calls and willingly walking away from your tax obligation will get you nowhere fast.
“Communicate with us,” said IRS spokesperson Mark Green. “Let us know what’s going on. The process goes a lot smoother if you communicate.”
If you don’t, the results, like property liens and wage garnishments, can be brutal.
“Those are typically last resorts,” said Corey Sutton, district manager for H&R Block. “But, once that action starts, it’s very difficult to reverse that.”
Work out a payment agreement: The IRS will work out a payment agreement in most instances. If you owe less than $25,000, you can sign up for an online payment plan. (http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=108347,00.html) It will cost you a one-time fee of $52; the cost is $105 if the payments are not made electronically. You’ll still pay 4% interest on the balance. To qualify for the installment plan or a short-term extension, you must have filed the prior year’s tax return and paid all your previous tax liabilities.
Offers In Compromise: The Offers in Compromise allows the taxpayer and the IRS to settle for less than the taxpayer owes. This year, the compromise is not only based on past income, but on current and potential income as well. That gives the IRS more room to work with the recently unemployed or those having economic struggles.
From The IRS Website Two Paragraphs Above

How to Set Up an Installment Agreement
Taxpayers wishing to pay off a tax debt through an installment agreement, and owe:
• $25,000 or less in combined tax, penalties, and interest can use the Online Payment Agreement (OPA) or call the number on the bill or notice (have the bill or notice available, along with the social security number). A fill-in Request for Installment Agreement, Form 9465 (PDF), is available online that can be mailed to the address on the bill.
Note: If you recently filed your income tax return and owe but have NOT yet received a bill from the IRS, you can use the Online Payment Agreement to establish an installment agreement on current year returns. To determine the information needed to establish a pre-assessed installment agreement, refer to What Information Do I Need to Use OPA?
• More than $25,000 in combined tax, penalties, and interest may still qualify for an installment agreement, but a Collection Information Statement, Form 433F (PDF) may need to be completed. Call the number on the bill or mail the Request for Installment Agreement, Form 9465 (PDF) and Form 433F (PDF) to the address on the bill.
You will receive a written notification telling you whether your terms for an installment agreement have been accepted or if they need to be modified.
